Kharwastan Temple History
The temple had its humble beginning in a small wood & iron building in Quail Street and served the local farming community. In 1935 this structure was destroyed by a severe rainstorm. In 1940 another wood & iron building was erected on lot 326, 20 Erica Ave. This property was eventually purchased from fixed properties in 1955 at a cost of R450. This temple, with minor improvements to its structure, served the Hindu community for some 39 years. Since this site at Erica Ave was declared residential, no alterations or additions in the structure were permitted by the Durban City Council. In 1975 an alternate site at 3 Oak Ave was purchased at a cost of R3500. A temporary wood & iron building was erected at 3 Oak Ave to serve as a temple. In 1993 the trustees initiated an extensive program of alteration and additions to the existing temple.
